Step-by-step guide

  1. What is WatSAFE desktop notification?

WatSAFE Desktop Notification is one of several channels the University of Waterloo's emergency communication system will use to distribute messages in the event of an emergency. When triggered, the WatSAFE Desktop Notification software would cause a pop-up window to appear on the users desktop screen, displaying the emergency message.

    IST-managed machines

The WatSAFE desktop notification software is pushed out to all IST-managed workstations via the SCCM software management tool.

    Non-managed machines

To install the latest version of the WatSAFE desktop notification software on a workstation not managed by IST, visit the AppArmor website at, https://uwaterloo.apparmor.com/Notifications/Mechanisms/Desktop/Download/ and complete the following steps:

    1. Click Extract all
    2. Double click to run setup.exe
    3. An installation window will appear
      1. Accept the agreement
      2. Accept default or Browse to select desired file storage location
      3. Click Install
      4. Local IT administrative priviledges may be required to complete the installation
    4. Leave Launch program box check
    5. Click Finish

    Managed machines outside of IST

If you are responsible for managing a group of machines outside of IST, you may request a package-based deployment version via Request Tracker (RT), https://rt.uwaterloo.ca/SelfService/Forms/IST-General/.

    Verifying installation

For both managed and non-managed machines

To ensure the WatSAFE Desktop Notification is installed, look for the icon (Waterloo crest) in the system tray and ensure the status icon is green. Hovering over the icon will display WatSAFE Desktop Notification.
